Special molecules do the work of reading a gene and making a protein.
These are the 'cooks', but they are not shown here.
The two spirals of the DNA are slit apart quite easily.
To make a protein, part of the the DNA gets split.
New bases are matched match up on one side of the split DNA,
but these bases are a bit different.

Instead of A being matched by T,
it is matched by a new base called U.

Bit by bit, a new chain of bases
gets made. It is called RNA.

This RNA is going to carry a message.
The message is the recipe for a protein.
This RNA is called messenger RNA,
or mRNA.

When the messenger RNA is complete,
the two DNA strands join up again
and the mRNA is ready for the next part.
